Arriving at the foothills of the mountains, we can see a facility above the treeline up the slope. It seems active in that smoke rises from one of the chimney’s. But droids don’t need smoke. The facility itself is a large plascrete building. There is a large scaffolding and crane assembly that has a cable line dropped into the back part of the building. Likely there is an open mining tunnel back there. We will have to trek up the slope, as a vehicle won’t get up there from this direction. Checking our notes and maps, we have no additional intelligence on the mining facility.
Now how do we want to get up there? Well, we do have the sneak suits. Z5 can move up, since he is in a mining droid body. Garrick, Koyi, and Trosk will shadow him wearing the sneaksuit. D4 and Tranus will wait at the treeline for the signal to come running up ready to blast things. Getting up to the edge of the treeline is easy enough. There are STAPs flying overhead, but as long as we remain reasonably out of sight. Once at the treeline, we get a better view of the building. There is a Trade Federation AAT (tank) parked out front, as well as four battle droids.
Z5 still intends to be a distraction. He trundles up to the door the tank isn’t sitting in front of. The battle droids stop him, and he tries to bluff his way inside with a story about coming from the other mine. The battle droids aren’t smart enough to be fooled. Going south fast, we open fire. Koyi takes out one of the battle droids near the tank, and D4 manages to scratch the tank. The tank tries to blast Koyi, but luckily only hits the tree he was hiding behind (blowing it apart). Z5 gets nailed at close range by the battle droids he stopped. A half dozen battle droids pile out of the AAT. Garrick runs up and slices a battle droid in two, as Trosk comes around the corner of the building and decimates another.
Tranus then bravely runs forward out of the treeline, and lobs a thermal detonator right in front of the tank. All the battle droids are blown to pieces, and the tank rocks from the explosion. As Z5 moves next to the door he was near, a wooshing overhead is heard as a droid starfighter lands nearby and reconfigures itself into walker mode. It then targets Garick, missing. Koyi moves sideways, firing off at the tank and needing to change his energy clip. The AAT fires at D4 and nails him, but his shield hold. D4 returns fire with the rotary carbine, and puts a number of holes in he tank, causing it to slump to the ground.
Through the doors of the facility two destroyer droids and three battle droids emerge. Two of the battle droids miss Garrick pitifully. The one destroyer droid turns turns attention to Trosk and Z5. Z5 comes out for the worse, as his body goes mostly to pieces and sparks every now and then. Garrick slices through the two battle droids that annoyed him. Trosk charges the droid starfighter, and actually manages to dent it. The destroyer droid near the wrecked tank opens up on Tranus who is prone – misses on all counts. Tranus opens up on the destroyer in return. One shot manages to hit before the clip runs dry. However, that shot manages to take it out.
The droid starfighter opens up on Trosk, missing. Koyi takes out another battle droid, and D4 opens up on the droid starfighter. And got its attention with some appreciable damage. The last remaining droidekar opens up on Garrick at point blank range, hitting and dropping him. Oh nuts. Trosk whips out the angry lizard fists upon the droid starfighter, denting it some more. Tranus stands up and shoots at the destroyer, hitting. The starfighter once again tries and fails to hit Trosk. Koyi moves closer to the destroyer and gets a glancing shot off at it. D4 opens up on the starfighter again, still whittling it down. The destroyer, not having anyone around it, decides that Trosk makes a good target, and scores a couple of good hits.
Tranus gets closer to the destroyer so he can make a telling shot. And it works, as the destroyer slumps to the ground. The starfighter launches a proton torpedo into our midst. Trosk manages to jump out of the way, but Tranus wasn’t so lucky. Koyi, in a last desperate gambit, fires his heavy blaster at the droid starfighter. He scores one good hit, and the thing blows up! Tranus runs over to check on Garrick, and brings him abck to consciousness. Koyi checks on Z5. The little droid’s a mess. It’s going to take at least 9 or 10 hours of work t put him back together – but he’ll live.
Checking inside the facility, we don’t see anymore droids. We do see ore carts, and a rail way for the carts. Through the doorway in the far wall, there is a large pit leading down – probably the mine entrance. There is also a set of stairs leading to an upper level. Trosk carefully moves up the stairs to check it out. On the upper level he sees two battle droids, a destroyer, and a neimoidian. The neimoidian orders the droids to fire at the intruder. The destroyer manages to score a couple of hits. Hearing blaster fire, the rest of us move in. D4 quickly moves up behind Trosk on the staircase. Trosk charges one of the battle droids, and tries to trip it. He fails. Garrick runs up the stairs past D4, and Koyi follows behind him. Tranus also joins the party, getting as far up the stairs as he can.
The destoyer opens up on Garrick, and gets hit once. He’s still standing. The rest of the shots from the droid all miss. The battle droids fire at Trosk, to no avail. D4 opens up on the destroyer, but doesn’t manage to do much. Garrick gets up near the destroyer and slices it apart. Trosk goes over to the neimoidian, attempting to pummel him into unconsciousness. Two hits later, the neimoidian is knocked out. Koyi moves forward and blasts the one battle droid, destroying it. Tranus runs up the stops and take the other battle droid down.
Trosk ties the neimoidian up so we can question him. Koyi check the door at the back of the room – ots the winch controls for the crane. He then checks through the notes on the desk. Most of them relate to the operations of the mine. The neimoidian however has an encrypted. With Z5 out of commission right now, Koyi decrypts the code. The data pad contains information about 28 ‘housed’ soldiers. They are likely down in the mine itself. Tranus comes back upstairs from bringing Z5’s body inside, he goes about waking up our prisoner. However, he’s too fa gone to wake up right now.
We all head downstairs to use the elevator into the mines. Koyi stays topside to operate the elevator winch controls. D4 also stays in case anything else hostile shows up. Lowering the platform takes about one minute to get to the bottom. The room at the bottom is about the same size as the room where the controls are. There are free-standing lights already down here The air is musty and damp. A single tunnel leads off from this room. Trosk bellows a “hello” down the corridor, and then the three proceed onwards. After some walking, the tunnel begins to descend. Another elevator system is ahead, leading down.
