I thought I'd never post on this but..... I hate to rain on people parades, but Cards and Items have ALWAYS ALWAYS been a part of D&D. I think it started with Dragonlance and worked it's way through the various systems. I KNOW AD&D had a couple of series of cards out depicting magic items, armor, artifacts, NPCs and their stats. This has continued with 3.5 with the advent of other cards. Some generic, some make your own. I know that Vchan was thinking about using them, I'm pretty sure that she IS using them. So huzzah for Cards being standard. Not all of us can paint, draw or be artsy with visual represnetations of what we're trying to do.

I remember the rules having spell components and such things, but from what I remember, it was always viewed as an optional rule.
I just think that these changes are going to hurt the game, however I see it having a positive side.... Other companies who offer different games may now have a chance to sell their own products. I know that Paizo has stated that they are considering maintaining a 3.5 game. Kudos to them...

It is that I just never thought of a RPG being made accessible for "gifted" people. The IEPs (Individualized Educational Profiles) are set up. Personally, I feel that there is a HUGE gap between what some of the IEPs are meant to do and what they end up doing in actuality. Recently, I had a student excused for selling drugs in the school, because of an IEP and another student punched a pregnant woman in the stomach.. deliberately and he too was excused!!! IEPs, when abused like this really piss me off.. No ill will taken by me, just a few points for clarity. By "gifted" I meant my regular umm..."brilliant" students who are in 9CP with me right now and can barely find the noun in a sentence. (Unless they had me in 7th grade and then they can still conjugate into the 11th grade.) My own personal opinions on IEP both for SED and regular itinerant and non-itinerant students, for the sake of my potential future employment, I tend to keep personal. Though I do know that some are milking the system for every 3-4 that do need it. Trust me. I'm sure we could swap some interesting stories. It's just, as a teacher I've learned that I can't always say what I want or mean to, even with tenure, if I want to keep my job. Heck even my MySpace page was designed so that no student could randomly find me. Simon and Sunny I'm sure can vouch that it's a very fine line anyone who works children walks. So forgive me if my euphemisms confused anyone, not my intent. I will also say that I totally agree with Brian, I mean I am infamous for my stick figure representations of "Homeward Bound," let me tell you that drawing a stick figure bear isn't as easy as it sounds. My husband got all the artistic talent in our relationship, and since the picture he drew for Mellandria from way back in our Viscount gaming days, I don't think he's done one for me since. So I like the idea of cards a little myself, for me it saves a little printer ink. I also think the 3.5 development is interesting. It will be nice to see how all this plays. I can't blame Wizards and Hasbro for what they're doing, this is a capitalistic society unfortunately. Anyway, making sure everyone was on the same page, I saw no ill will in Simon's comments about the IEPs and I too am glad that people can express themselves in an open forum. Besides, I get to use cute little smiley thingies like this ;D and that makes everything even cooler!

I am in a rather lucky position when it comes to the topic of IEP's and I am also in a llittle bit of a hypocritical position as well.
As a School Resource Officer, I get to see the inne workings of the school without having to be part of it. As I tell the students, I work WITH the school, not FOR the school.
I have the ability to freely comment without issue of tennure and such. I have openly critisized the abuses that I have seen.
The hypocrit part comes from the fact that my son currently has an IEP. It is our hope that we can eliminate it before he goes to school, but as of now, he has one. IEP's are a good thing when used properly, but when a counselor can declare that selling drugs or punching pregnant teachers in the stomach as manifestations of a disability..... well... that is where I start banging my head off of brick walls.
<Re-rails topic>
I have lost faith in WotC and the D&D 4.0 process. At this point, it is like a rollercoaster ride. I'm going to sit down and hold and at the end, maybe I'll say that the rde was fun..... or I might just puke on somebody.

As far as GEIPs, I am only biased because 2 of my 3 daughters have GEIPs. There are some that don't deserve them, and some that need them and don't have them, but they do get little treats that "normal" students don't have. I have tried saying what I wanted to say, and it has bit me in my ass. Thankfully, working at a "college", I don't have to worry about 2387439879873 parents coming down on me - just my supervisor. Although, I swear, some adults act just like children. And as far as a card system for that visual enhancement (or "oh duh, that's what I have"), I think for YOUNGER players or the newest generation of players, well - I think that's awesome. As far as the feat changes - bah. But then this is from someone who doesn't have a PhD in D&D editions. Not that having one is a bad thing, just saying.

I admit. I use cards. The ones Paizo put out with the blank backs for filling in what the items are (when they finally manage to ID them anyways.) The youngest player in my group is 25, and the oldest is 33 and they absolutely love em. At the end of the story arc, I describe what they've found, and hand them an envelope with their stuff.
It actually does help us with organizing as it makes the question "Quick! Do you have a cure serious on you?!" a quick thing to answer. Its less useful for items with charges, or some of the permanent magic items but for potions and scrolls its a godsend.

Actually, I thought that it was Ken after a REALLY GOOD party at Brabie's house. Does WotC really see what they are doing or do they just have blind non-gamers making this junk?

www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4ex/20080514aOk. I dont know about anyone else, but I LIKE more complicated economies than this. I had to read how they handle treasure three times before I believed it. Magic item levels, (I'm assuming you cant use the item until you match its level)? And disenchanting magical items to gain materials for enchanting new ones? These are two stellar examples taken almost directly out of World of Warcraft. While they may be in other MMO's as well, WoW is the one I'm familiar with. Is anyone else turning a little green? I mean, WoW stole several of its best ideas directly from DnD, and dumbed them down a bit. Right up to and including drow/night elves with a bit of a facelift. Now DnD turns around and steals ideas from WoW... and dumbs them down a bit. I dont like where this trend is going.
